Wales December 2024 Day 6: Penblwydd hapus Myrna….have a lovely day!

Firstly, as this new day, this Boxing Day is dawning we’d like to wish Myrna a very happy 80th birthday. May your day be filled with love and laughter. Secondly, we mustn’t forgot we’ve got a FaceTime call with our friend Jane at 7.30pm this evening.

We’d completed our yoga session by 8:30am and had an early breakfast thinking we’d go out early for our walk along the coast path but things didn’t quite pan out like that. I had a chill on my stomach and Maice fell asleep on the sofa so we didn’t set off until 12.50pm!  It was still misty which meant the foghorns were still sounding every 30 seconds and from our patio you still couldn’t see the headland or the sea.  We donned our wet weather gear, stepping forth in our wellies and walking shoes and headed off down Plunch lane where we turned right at the bottom.  We’d decided to walk the coast path again to Langland bay but instead of walking the high path like we did the other day we’re going to walk along the low path.

We set off from the house with an extremely reluctant Winston who wasn’t having any of it. All he wanted was his nice cosy bed from which he’d been plucked just ten minutes earlier and all we wanted to do was to walk our daily 10,000 steps and of course enjoy a cappuccino overlooking the beach. After a lot of mincing around from Winston, who kept stopping and starting and trying to turn back we managed to get him down to the beginning of the coast path where he dug his feet in and refused to budge.  Honestly, he can be quite embarrassing sometimes. People were walking past, many with their well-behaved dogs looking on rather bemusedly at the spectacle before them.  Two grown women trying to coax a very small dog to walk along the coast path. It was going to be a long walk that’s for sure. We frogmarched him some way along the path before he realised this was a no-win situation so he eventually behaved like a dog and started sniffing and wee-ing his way along the path! It was actually quite busy on the pathway with lots of family groups out walking together, probably trying to walk off yesterday’s Christmas dinner! The low path we were walking on is an actual concrete and tarmac path so it’s suitable for wheelchairs and prams and it’s not too steep either and it’s much quicker to walk along albeit with a slow dog in tow!

We arrived at Langland Bay and decided to give the cafe on the beach a go so found a table overlooking  the beach and ordered our cappuccinos.  We both concluded they were not the best coffees we’d had this holiday but never mind, we’re off to Gin & Juice tomorrow and we know we’ll enjoy our artisan coffee in there.

We took Winston onto the beach where he had a really good run round on the sand and when we went to walk back home along the path he wanted to stay on the beach. Honestly, you can’t win. With much cajoling we managed to get him to walk on, promising him he could have ten minutes with his wobble wag giggle ball when we got home.  We were looking forward to our apple cake and Canyero salted caramel rum which believe it or not we didnt have yesterday.

Winston and his undercarriage was filthy again by the time we arrived home so once again he ended up in the round kitchen sink being hosed down. But for being such a good boy we gave him his ball and for the next ten minutes mayhem ensued. Honestly, he goes absolutely crazy with it and it’s quite exhausting watching him race around the rooms with it. He loves it so much we do believe it’s the best present he’s ever had!

We sat in front of the fire, Maice on the sofa, me on the chair and enjoyed our apple cake and brandy cream and savoured our rum. Honestly, this salted caramel rum is so delicious we can’t believe we’re nearly at the end of the bottle……we really must go on-line and purchase a few more bottles.

It’s funny, but this Christmas all we seem to have done in the evenings is watch TV. Usually we play card games and last Christmas we started to create our masterpiece, a canvas of Mr Brainwash’s ‘Follow your Dreams’ painting by numbers. We’d brought it with us this year with the intention of completing it but we haven’t even got it out of its bag yet and there’s only two nights left. Ah well, New Year’s resolution…..we must complete said canvas before the end of 2025!

We watched Beauty and the Beast, had ourselves a little sing-song then tra-la-la-la la’ahd our way to the kitchen to cook supper, a delightful affair of mashed potato sitting in a large Yorkshire pudding topped with two veggie sausages and lots of gravy. Yes, this was no ordinary sausage and mash, this was M&A inspired sausage and mash and it was delicious. During supper Winston serenaded us with his high pitched barking. Honestly, he very rarely barks but here he’s barked and growled almost every day. What is it that he can he hear outside and whats spooked him? Could there be a ghost within these walls. It’s anyone’s guess but Maice had to take him for a walk outside just to show him there was nothing to be worried out. Bless him!

At 7:15pm we sat down to watch Apollo 13, such a brilliant film after which we watched another film…..Seven Brides for Seven Brothers. We did laugh at how dated it was but we sang along to all the tunes and we’re proud to say we knew more than one line of the lyrics. It was just coming to the end of the film, you know where all the brides marry all the brothers when….. ‘We gotta text’.  A text from Jane! Omg, we’ve forgotten to FaceTime her.  We had totally forgotten due to a) neither of us had set an alarm to remind us b) we’d had a few drinkies by then and c) we were so engrossed in Apollo 13 we didn’t realise the time….! We’ve now rescheduled it to tomorrow morning at 9:30am so M&A, set an alarm and don’t forget! Jane, we’re very sorry and we’ll see you in the morning!

On that note we all made our way to our respective beds but the question was where and with whom was Winston spending the night? I must say that since being here I have been observing the relationship between Maice and Sir Winston and have drawn the following conclusions…a) he is very spoilt b) he gets ‘tucked-in’ and covered with his blanket whether he wants to or not and c) if he’s sitting up on the sofa or in his bed he gets told to ‘lie down’ then Maice will make a cocoon for him so he can’t be seen…..need I go on! Ah, dogs and their owners!

Nos da….
